Corey on the last day of classes!

Do I agree with Mrs. Chua? Well not nessiccarilly , a lot of things Mrs. Chua used to raise her children that I definitely do not agree with. For instance calling her children names and being sarcastic to motivate children is completely out of line. They may be your children but there are still laws and regulations that protect children from any type of abuse whether it be verbal, physical, or psychological. I also do not agree with Mrs. Chua because there are so many other ways of parenting that can be much more efficient than Mrs. Chua’s “Tiger Mom” method.
“Chinese” tiger mom’s have a rather tenacious way of raising their children through school. Amy Chua said she calls her child “garbage” as a way to motivate her. I couldn’t begin to imagine how exasperated I would be if my parent were to sarcastically monopolizing me. These are strong children, because I don’t think I could take it. Tiger mom’s spurt out a lot of negative remarks when it comes to school. Ms. Chua demands academic excellence from her children. This unlike western moms is more important than her child’s self esteem. Tiger moms also believe that their children owe them everything.
Western moms have more of an extemporaneous way of raising their children. Western parents choose to find the right aptitude for their children, and would rather not excoriate their children. “Western parents are concerned about their children’s psyches.” Western parents are more worried about their children’s happiness now a less concerned about the long run.
In this article David Brooks is saying that everything Mrs. Chua kept her daughters away from because she thought it would make them stronger it only made them weaker. In order to succeed in life you have to have some type of social intellect, since Mrs. Chua kept her daughters from fun social activities they now are deprived of a balmy childhood and a success full future. Mr. Brooks also put out that the hard part wasn’t getting straight A’s, but was learning to deal with other kids and people like themselves. “I wish she recognized that in some important ways the school cafeteria is more intellectually demanding then the library”. Brooks implies that Chua is making her children wimps, because she’s keeping them from the real world.
The excerpt by Hannah Rosin was very profound. In the article Mrs. Rosin says that success will make you happy. “Happiness is humanities greatest quest”. Says Mrs. Rosin happiness lies in finding your passion. After one finds their passion they no longer need someone to push them anymore. No one has enough confidence to push and perseverance to push themselves to their best.
In conclusion although others and I may not favor Mrs. Chua’s way of parenting, it obviously still works. Mrs. Chua’s daughters both played piano and violin at Carnegie Hall. One of her daughters is going off to Harvard University for her first year of college. The reason I don’t believe in that method of parenting is because there is always other ways to raise a adolescent. I also know that when I finally have children that I will raise them the “Western Mom” style, because I believe my child’s confidence an self-esteem is the first step to success.

In this article Medusa and the snail by biologist Lewis Thomas. Mr. Thomas explains why mistakes are a key to success in the actions of people. An unexpected mistake happens one could say “look at that”. After mistakes are made the real work gets done. These small mistakes turned into moments of discovery. “represent the highest human endowments”.
I have experienced failure in my life time. An example of a failure of mine was my 9th grade year. I was pretty arrogant and incompetent. My insolence blinded me from what I knew was right. I didn’t have any respect for what teachers, family and outside mentors were trying to do for me. I didn’t understand the importance for the things I didn’t have any respect for. Me failing 9th grade year made me realize that if I didn’t get my act together I wouldn’t graduate on time with my class, due to lack of credits. Knowing that without my high school diploma I couldn’t even get an interview at McDonalds I got my act together. Failing 9th grade year gave me a glimpse of the real world. Gave me a glimpse of what can happen an how I can end up unemployed, homeless, or worse comes to worse……..dead.
Alexander Flemin was a great doctor who had seen many terrible casualties in 1929. Dr. Flemin decided to go and research for a vaccine for bacteria so it wouldn’t kill us. Failure is very important because Dr. Flemin many times within the two years he was researching. Finally he failed to hone proper house etiquette an wash the dishes. When he did this mold started to grow in the dishes which started to kill the bacteria he had in another plate. Dr. Flemin started running test and found out that the mold was an antibiotic for all bacteria’s. Dr. Flemin names the mold penicillin, this antibiotic is still used today. After Dr. Flemin’s break through there were much less casualties in WWII thanks to the antibiotic. Dr. Flemin’s mistake is a great example of a failure that turned out to be a major success not just for Alexander but for the world.
In the last two paragraphs were examples of how we as people learned from our mistakes own mistakes. This is an example in literature of “To Kill A Mockingbird”. When scout got in fights with the other boys. Scout would fight the other boys because they would talk about her dad for defending a “nigger” as they say in the book. Over a course of time scout learns not to get in fights, but to use your words instead of her fist like her father does in the court room.
In conclusion these are all examples of failures that convert into success, whether it be In a book, in history, or in now day life. I agree that in all cases you learn something from failure, but the hard part is if you take what you learn and teach others.

In this excerpt I read about a class that obtained more than 50% of dishonest, immoral students. The teacher was asked by the board to go easy on the students. I think this is extremely unacceptable, the students decided to cheat now they should suffer the consequences. Reprocautions is what we all need to teach us what is right and what is wrong. If there is none then what will we learn.
I think that the teacher Ms. Pelton was doing right in failing the students, because that’s the type of grade they. The parents should not be complaining to the school because they’re child doesn’t have any sense of morality. No morals reflects back on the parents, if your child doesn’t have any integrity or morals to do what’s right it’s because you raised them that way. Ms. Pelton cared enough to give the sophomores zero’s on their project to teach them something even though they didn’t learn anything from the assigned project.
The PIPER School board was completely out of line. The board should not have gone easy on the students that cheated. Zero’s on the project is the least that their consequences should have been. I know many other teachers who would resign from work also. Unlike the PIPER School board Ms. Pelton has an incredible amount of integrity. “this reflects the national decline in integrity”. As a hard working student I would be very exasperated to see other students being coddled while I’m working my butt off to do my best, and get the same grade they cheated for.
In conclusion I admire Ms. Pelton for doing the right thing when nobody else did. I hope in the end these kids get some type of punishment. Cheating is wrong, and its very crucial that parents take care of this problem early. If we keep allowing to kids to cheat they will continue all the way past college. Cheating in life never gets you anywhere good.

In this story “love” is a word that happens to be thrown around a lot. Medea loved her brother, but she killed him. Medea loved her children, but she murdered them. Medea loved Jason so much she was willing to kill his soon to be wife and father-in-law. This isn’t love Medea did most of these things out of hatred. She did not want to live in exile without her beloved Jason.
Although, Medea did have her reasons for doing the things she did. Jason did break his promise to her, to love her forever and to always have faith in their love. If Jason didn’t break his promise maybe none of this would have happened. After Medea and Jason broke apart Medea was lonely and confused. She didn’t understand nor want to understand what Jason was doing nor why he was doing it. This is why Medea killed Jason’s soon to be wife, children, and father-in-law.
However, these things do not justify what Medea has done. Jason did break his promise, but people break promises all the time. Things happen, its apart of life, move on. Any woman that is willing to murder her own children out of revenge and spite of another person, doesn’t deserve children in the first place. Medea deserves a very lonely life where no one can make contact with her.
Some might think of Medea as some type of hero for being such a strong willed person even during something like this. I think Medea is a psycho/ lunatic for doing something as irrational as kill her own children bore from her own womb. I don’t know how she can do something so unbearable as killing an innocent life. Jason’s reason for leaving Medea to marry a queen was so that when the children get older they may live a wonderful live as a royal.
In conclusion medea got her revenge on Jason. Jason lived in pain an agony for the rest of his life. Medea went on to live in Greece where she started a new life. I think medea deserved to die some how everything she’s done will catc
h up to her eventually in life. Its called karma!
